Independence Day message from Ambassador Philip T. Reeker Consul General in Milan
Happy Independence Day! Although Americans will celebrate our national day across the globe, Milan is THE place to be this year. The New York Times named Milan as its top travel destination for 2015, so I am in not alone in my admiration for this magnificent city.
On July 4, 2015 we will celebrate the 239th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a special day back home, with fireworks and family barbeques. But it’s just as special– perhaps even more so–for Americans living abroad. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Consulate General in Milan. For a century and a half, Milan has been an important center for American business and cultural ties. Consulate General Milan covers the largest district in Italy, stretching through the seven northern regions, from Trieste to Genoa, in addition to the two provinces of Parma and Piacenza. Over the last 150 years we have proudly provided services to generations of Americans, and promoted the strong friendship between Italy and the United States.
Milan Expo 2015 is already a huge success! With millions of visitors and extraordinary pavilions representing over 145 countries, the EXPO provides the perfect platform for global discussion on the theme “Feeding the Planet.” The USA Pavilion is among EXPO’s most popular sites, and represents the best of what our country has to offer in innovation, ingenuity, and talent.
Since opening its doors on May 1, the USA Pavilion has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors. President Obama welcomes all visitors to the USA Pavilion with a video introduction to how America is harnessing innovation in the fields of food security and agricultural sustainability; health and nutrition; climate change and water; trade and development. Student Ambassadors from all over the United States guide visitors through each of the exhibits and provide the unique opportunity for cultural exchange with the many foreign visitors to the pavilion.
If you haven’t already, make plans to visit the USA Pavilion, and be sure to stop by our beautiful rooftop patio for a panoramic view of EXPO while enjoying your favorite beverage from the bar. Just steps from the USA Pavilion is “Food Truck Nation,” where you can enjoy cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, lobster rolls, and a variety of typical American desserts. For all the latest information on the USA Pavilion’s activities, visit: www.usapavilion2015.net.
This summer we also commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. As we enjoy Independence Day, we should also reflect on the freedoms and blessings we share. Celebrating seven decades of unprecedented peace and prosperity, in no small part thanks to the positive values of trans-Atlantic cooperation and stability.
I would like to thank our friends at Easy Milano for their collaboration. Your own July 4th party will be, I am sure, a big success—it always is!
On behalf of the U.S. Consulate General in Milan, I wish all my fellow Americans and our Italian friends a very happy and safe Independence Day. There are truly so many reasons to celebrate. Buona Festa a tutti!
